Church Law

Canon Law

Church Law concerns any church’s or religion’s laws, rules, and regulations; more commonly, the written policies that guide the powers of the clergy, administration of the church and religious ceremonies.

In the Roman Catholic Church, laws are drawn from ancient church documents, councils of bishops’ decisions, and papal rulings, and are collected in the Code of Canon Law.

Today, many disputes in Protestant denominations arise under their own canon laws, and involve issues of ownership of church properties, succession between church bodies, and the like, which also require the application of state laws.

Haley & Bilheimer can help you with such issues arising within a church, or between the denomination and one or more of its entities.
